We answer all your FAQs on Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), the most popular hair transplant technique, which is one of the safest cosmetic surgery procedures performed today.
When considering any type of cosmetic surgery, even minor ones like FUT, it’s crucial to ask questions – and get them answered!
You must have peace of mind and feel confident and reassured in the decision you have made before entering into any medical procedure.
Questions I am often asked include: is FUT permanent? Does it look natural? Is it painful?
Transplanted hair behaves in a similar way to the hair where it was taken from. When the procedure is completed correctly, the transplanted hair will last a lifetime for most people – or at least into old age.
A carefully performed FUT looks incredibly natural. When carried out by a skilled surgeon, it will only be detected by thorough expert medical examination. It is almost impossible for a layperson – or even a hairdresser – to identify.
The donor site will have a very fine scar, however, it will be completely hidden by your hair. Even with very short covering hair, the technique of trichophytic donor closure is now making donor scars extremely difficult to detect.
Hair transplants are performed under local anaesthetic. Donor and recipient sites are totally frozen and de-sensitised and during the hair transplant, patients can choose to a DVD, browse YouTube, listen to the radio or music, read a book or simply take a nap.
The only discomfort that may occur is when the anaesthetic is initially applied for a few minutes and, for some, a few days after the operation. However, this can be easily controlled with the medication offered after the procedure.
It is natural to feel nervous prior to undergoing any surgical procedure. However, the right information from the right sources should help you feel much more at ease.
