HAIR TRANSPLANT POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Be Careful Not To Bump Your Head!
  2. Sleep in a position of about a 45-degree angle (using 2 to 4 pillows) for the next 3nights to prevent swelling and discomfort. Place an old towel on the pillow in case of slight bleeding.
  3. Use an ice pack (or bag of frozen peas) belowthe grafted area for 10-15 minutes at a time and repeat every 4-6 hours for the next 3 days from tomorrow. This can help contain swelling and discomfort. Do not apply ice pack directly on your skin, wrap it in a clean towel first.
  4. Take medications given to you by the doctor. The pain relief tablets are to be used only if needed. You will most likely need these for the first 48 hours.  Whilst taking your pain medication please avoid alcohol, do not operate machinery or drive if you feel drowsy.  Keep out of reach of children.  Do not take any other product that contains paracetamol and do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.
  5. No strenuous physical activity for one week after surgery e.g. sex, jogging, sport, gym, fast stair-climbing, etc.
  6. Do NOT use aspirin or aspirin-containing products for the next 2 days.
  7. Do NOT drink alcohol over the next 24 hours.
  8. Do NOT bend over to the floor over the next 2 days. Get down on your knees instead.
  9. Do NOT try to remove the crusts (scabs) from the top of your head too soon. Wait and they will fall off at about 7-14 days after surgery. Do not be alarmed if the hair falls out with the crust. The roots are deep and hair will grow back in12-16 weeks. Thereafter, your hair should grow at approx. 1 cm (half an inch) a month.
  10. Do NOT wash your hair for the first 24 hours. Afterwards you can wash your hair everydaycarefully in the shower. Do not scrub the grafts for 7 days (see below).
  11. Do NOT use any cosmetics on your hair  or Minoxidil on your grafted scalp (if you use it) for 7 daysafter your operation.
  12. If bleeding occurs, take the swabs given to you and apply to the area with a little pressure for 5-10 minutes and the bleeding will stop.

WASHING YOUR HAIR IN THE SHOWER FOR THE FIRST 7 DAYS

If you don’t have a shower available to you, a large cup or similar vessel can be used. With the shower on mild power, place the hand towel provided on your head over the grafted area. Let the water soak the towel, gently patting it with your hand. Apply the shampoo to the wet towel and gently pat for approximately 30 seconds. Take the towel off, rinse it, place it back on the grafted area and rinse the soap off your head through the towel as before. It is important to make sure that all the soap is rinsed off as it may cause itching. Use a clean towel and gently dab out excess water. DO NOT RUB. You may use a hair dryer afterwards but be careful and keep it about 30 cms away from your scalp. You can use a comb gently but avoid using a hairbrush. After 7 days you can gradually go back to your normal washing routine.

HAIR WASHING & PRODUCT INFORMATION

MOISTURISING SPRAY: First 24 hours

Spray your scalp every 2 hours of your waking hours (Donor and Grafted area) with the Moisturising  spray provided. A light misting is enough and should be left to dry naturally. Do not touch the scalp with your hands. Keep doing this for 4 days post procedure.

SHAMPOO:   use after 24 hours

If you don’t have a shower available to you, a large cup or similar vessel can be used.  With the shower on mild power, place the hand towel provided on your head over the grafted area.  Let the water soak the towel, gently patting it with your hand.  Apply the shampoo to the wet towel and gently pat for approximately 30 seconds.  The shampoo is of a watery consistency to allow it to soak easily through the hand towel.  Take the towel off, rinse it, place it back on the grafted area and rinse the soap off your head through the towel as before.  It is important to make sure that all the soap is rinsed, otherwise it may cause itching.  Use a clean towel and gently dab out excess water.  DO NOT RUB.

HAIR & SCALP CONDITIONER:   use after 7 days

After 7 days, you can wash the grafted area without the towel.  You can then use conditioner  after each shampoo.  Apply gently to your hair, leave for approximately 1 minute, then rinse thoroughly.  Gently dab your hair to remove excess water.
