What to Look for if You’re Considering a Hair Transplant Abroad

Hair transplant procedures are life-changing treatments, and it’s no surprise that many people explore options abroad in search of lower costs or quicker availability. While medical tourism may seem appealing, there are important risks to consider. At the Farjo Hair Institute, we believe in empowering patients with the knowledge they need to make safe, informed decisions, so here’s our guide on what you should look for if you’re considering a clinic abroad.

The Risks of Medical Tourism

While some overseas clinics operate to high standards, many are unregulated or fail to meet the rigorous guidelines followed in the UK. Patients can be misled by low prices, glossy marketing, or misleading before-and-after photos.

“We’ve seen patients come to us after suffering poor outcomes or service abroad. The biggest concern is when surgery is performed by unqualified technicians instead of trained surgeons,” explains Dr Zayn Sattar, Hair Transplant Surgeon at Farjo Hair Institute. “Dressing up a hair transplant as a ‘holiday’, complete with transfers and luxury hotel stay, trivialises what is serious and life-changing surgery” he adds.

Before-and-After Photos – A Word of Caution

One of the biggest red flags is the use of stolen or misleading patient images. In fact, we are currently pursuing legal action against a Turkish clinic that unlawfully used our own patient photos to advertise their services. This kind of misrepresentation is more common than many people realise.

When reviewing photos online:

  • Look for consistency across the gallery – do the backgrounds, lighting, or angles look authentic?
  • Always do a quick Google image search to see the original source of the photo.
  • Verify results with patient testimonials or video evidence when possible.

Recognised Bodies You Can Trust

When researching hair transplant surgeons, look for accreditation from established organisations such as:

  • BAHRS (British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery) – the leading professional body in the UK, which enforces strict ethical and medical standards.
  • ISHRS (International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery) – a global non-profit medical association dedicated to ensuring high-quality standards in hair restoration.

Membership in these organisations is a strong indication of a surgeon’s qualifications and commitment to patient safety.

Questions to Ask Before Booking Surgery Abroad

Before committing, arm yourself with the right questions:

  1. Who will actually be performing the surgical part of the procedure – a qualified surgeon or technicians?
  2. Are the doctors registered with recognised bodies like BAHRS or ISHRS?
  3. Can I verify the authenticity of before-and-after photos?
  4. What is the aftercare process, and will I receive follow-up support when I return home?
  5. What happens if something goes wrong – will the clinic provide corrective treatment?
  6. How many procedures has the surgeon personally performed?
  7. Can I speak with previous patients about their experiences?

“Patients mustn’t underestimate the importance of aftercare. Complications often arise once you’re home, and an overseas clinic may not provide the ongoing support you need,” adds Dr Zayn Sattar.

FAQ – Hair Transplants Abroad

Is it cheaper to have a hair transplant abroad?
Very likely, procedures abroad can be cheaper, but lower costs often reflect lower safety and medical standards, as well as rushed processes.

Can I trust before-and-after photos online?
Not always. Many clinics use stock photos or steal images from reputable practices like ours. Always verify sources. Even genuine photos are often misleading due to different postures, backgrounds and lighting.

What if I have complications after returning home?
This is a major risk. Many UK surgeons are reluctant to treat complications caused overseas, and corrective work may end up costing more than if you had surgery in the UK initially.

How do I know if a surgeon is qualified?
Check if they are members of BAHRS or ISHRS, and verify their credentials before making any decision. Another important qualification is certification by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS).

Travelling abroad for a hair transplant carries significant risks. If you’re considering this route, do thorough research, check a clinic’s credentials, and ask the right questions. Above all, prioritise your safety over cost savings and marketing hype

At Farjo Hair Institute, we are committed to raising awareness of the risks of cheap medical tourism and helping patients make informed choices about their hair restoration journey.
