Our latest blog article focuses on making sure your questions are answered on FUT. You’ve been for your consultation and finally taken the plunge to book in for a hair transplant – but your mind’s still spinning with questions.
If, like a large portion of our patients, you suffer from advanced hair loss, require large amounts of restoration and not in a position to have your head shaved for the surgery, then you’re likely to need what’s known as a strip Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). This involves taking a thin strip of hair and surrounding tissue from the donor area, before the strip is microscopically separated into individual grafts ready for re-implantation.
The question a lot of our patients have is, does it last? Put simply, the answer is yes. Broadly speaking, transplanted hair will behave the same way as it did in its original location. So, the donor hair will be genetically different to the balding hair and therefore shouldn’t fall out in the same way.
Although more and more people, including celebrities, are undergoing hair transplant procedures, it remains an embarrassing subject for many. Therefore, we always make sure that although the final result is significant, it will retain the subtleness of hair that looks like it’s always been there.
Performed by the right surgeon, FUT looks very natural and it’s almost impossible for people – or even hairdressers – to notice. However, if you don’t have enough hair to conceal the work you’ve had done, it’s worth considering booking a hair transplant just before a week’s holiday from work, if you don’t want anyone to know about it.
Many patients also ask whether they’ll regain a full head of hair following their procedure. While we’re not creating new hair per se, it’s possible that the donor hair can give the illusion of a good head of hair, especially if the person has a significant hair loss. It takes around eight to fourteen months for the full effects of a hair transplant to be seen.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that hair transplant surgery is more about losing the ‘balding look’ than it is about trying to bring back the hair that was once there.
